Hello and welcome to The Weekend Artisan website from Doug and Jan. Here is an introduction to what I hope you will be able to get from this site. Our philosophy is, there is nothing more rewarding than doing it yourself, it’s even more rewarding when you can eat and enjoy what you make, and that is what this site is about. To read more about our way of thinking, take a look at this article.
Being able to make your own food meets all of the aims of ‘being green’, reducing your ‘carbon footprint’, it’s also in line with the ‘slow food movement’, it allows you to know what you are putting into your food and it can be delicious. It’s surprisingly easy, rewarding, value for money and healthier, because it is not full of chemicals.
Our focus is the Winchester, Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh, Southampton areas of Hampshire, but all are welcome. I run a cheese making course for those who want to make cheese at home, this is at the moment based in Chandlers Ford, and is open to anyone. Please check the website for upcoming dates.
We are not lifestyle gurus, we are just people who enjoy the challenge of making our own food and the thing about it is, what we do is limited because we both work in very demanding jobs. We prove what you can do just by using your limited weekend time and incorporating this into your relaxation periods of your weekend break.
As you look through the site you will see several posts and a blog, along with sessions on how to make or do things, tips, hints and signposts to other web sites. Our aim is to form a community of like minded weekend artisans who use their spare time on a Saturday or Sunday to make things in their kitchen, and pass on their experiences and expertise. Our interests focus primarily on cheese making, home baking, growing our own fruit and vegetables, curing and preserving foods including chutneys, pickles, bacon and sausages, along with hen and beekeeping. It’s up to you what other foods or drinks you want to share with our readers, this site is hopefully going to fire you up to try more different things.
Obviously I can only confirm any blog texts written by myself, but I will endeavour to question any blog posting that I feel may be misleading. Please join in, I hope the website becomes a living entity which serves the growing movement of people out there who want to save money, watch what they eat and improve the quality of the food they do eat.
